One of the first decisions in any project: web or mobile application? Or both? We break down the factors that are decisive for the right choice.

One of the most common questions we get from clients: “Do we need a web application or a mobile one?” The short answer is: it depends. The long answer is what follows.

What Determines the Right Choice?

Users and Context of Use

Ask yourself: where will users use the application?

  • On a computer, during working hours → web application is the natural choice
  • In the field, on the move, without a computer → mobile application
  • Both → consider PWA or parallel development

Offline Work

If your users need to work without internet (field inspection, areas with poor signal), a mobile application is the only real choice. Web applications require a constant connection.

Device Hardware Access

Do you need a camera, GPS, NFC, push notifications? A mobile app has full access to all device capabilities. Web apps have limited access — though this is improving over time.

PWA — The Middle Ground

A Progressive Web App is a web application that behaves like a mobile app: it can be installed on the home screen, works offline (with a cache strategy), and sends push notifications.

PWA advantages:

  • One codebase for all platforms
  • Faster updates (no App Store approval)
  • Lower development costs

Disadvantages:

  • Limited hardware access
  • iOS support is worse than Android
  • No presence in the App Store

Our Recommendation for B2B Projects

For most business applications (ERP modules, internal tools, team dashboards) — start with a web application. It develops faster, updates more easily, and is accessible from any device.

Add a mobile application when you have clear use cases that justify it: fieldwork, offline operation, scanning, notifications.

Conclusion

There’s no universal answer. But there is a right answer for your specific case — and we arrive at it together, through analysis of your users and processes.
